Bodies in space is kind of where I want to go—module sculpture was what I began exploring in 2010 and that kind of morphed into people becoming part of their environment..so it’s seems appropriate to start combining both of those ideas into one large dramatic piece. I had been itching to turn my new apt into kind of an installation, so this is probably the beginning of that experiment. Welcome to my laboratory.

This is such an amazing piece, the head is the size of a child, there is also this phenomenon of the chest being somewhat androgynous.. I had always thought Michelangelo’s ladies kind of looked like they were men, with some boobs stuck on them..and here is a male figure with some small breasts. Though in this image, it’s in keeping with the many lumps of flesh. (sorry but I must also point out that this guy is giving you the finger..it’s not very obvious is it?)

This is a different engraver, however, similar ideas that have been swimming in my head for many years. I went to Brussels and have photographs of these undulating mouthed horses …never forgot them, so I feel like this is a great starting point for the work. (Usually I have this dialogue with my own ideas, but this time I wanted to see what happens when I start from a different place..).

So I decided I was going to post an entire thought process of my work- I’m about to make a large piece for a show, and the seeds for this piece …I’m allowing myself to look at images I had collected from last year- this guy Hendrick Goltzius, it’s intriguing how the people look similar to the standards in recent comic book bodies..and for some reason there seems to be this crossover between bodies in comics and porn..

Here is a layout I did before construction these pieces. It’s always great to see how things evolve when I get to finally dip my hands into the materials. No, I don’t know who that gentleman is- he is in there for scale. I liked him as a generalized art patron- if you know him, please let him know I really appreciate him being in my layout..let me know who he is too!
